Bechtsis - The Nightwatchman” by Kostas Lakis

(Winter 2022)

This play took part in a competition for the Writing and Performance of a Theatrical Work of the Municipality of Athens (Culture Is Athens) "Theater at the Museum - Stories of Movement" on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the Asia Minor catastrophe and tells the story of two refugees from Smyrna to Athens in 1922. The performance took place at the Industrial Gas Museum of Technopolis in Gazi and received the first prize for best text and best performance.

Two men flee, persecuted along with thousands of other Greeks from Smyrna, carrying the same fear and the same anxiety about their uncertain future.

Immigrants in a city that does not like them will try to survive. Desperate, they will hide in the courtyard of the Athens Gas Station and as fate plays its games, they will try to seize an opportunity to save themselves.

How believable will Spyros Karambeyoglu's transformation become and how long will Kosmas Sambountzoglu endure locked in the wooden box?

How will a night-watchman brighten the lives of two people trying to get back on their feet, as violets and hyacinths fill 1922 Athens, the Gasworks in Piraeus and Ermou Street with color?

The play was performed in December 2022 at the T.W.P. theater in the Castle of Agios Andreas, at the outdoor area of the old slaughterhouses in Preveza in July 2023 and at the FAOS theater in Igoumenitsa in April 2024, while it toured the region of Epirus in the summer of 2024, giving three performances in Archangelos, Rizas and Skoupas of Artas.
