The Threepenny Opera” by Bertold Brecht

(Autumn 2020)

The Threepenny Opera is a musical work by Bertolt Brecht with music by Kurt Weill. It is an adaptation and adaptation of the 18th-century English play “The Beggar’s Opera” by John Gay.

It premiered on August 21, 1928 in Berlin and is considered one of the greatest successes in the history of theater. By the end of the 1928-1929 season, it had run for 4,000 performances in about 200 different productions. In 1933, it was banned in Germany by the Nazi regime, but in the meantime the work had been translated into 18 languages and had been performed on European stages over 10,000 times.

At times, the play has been described as an opera, operetta, musical, satire, political cabaret, and more. The play borrows elements from many different types of theater and ultimately constitutes a special theatrical genre in its own right.

The central theme of the threepenny opera is the constant exploitation of man by man, with alternations in the role of perpetrator and victim, and the absolute dominance of money in human relations.

However, an inviolable condition for Brecht for the presentation of a political position in the theater is humor, satire, irony, and self-sarcasm. The main goal of the play is for the audience to recognize the wrongs of society and to be entertained.

During the winter of 2020, the group rehearses Brecht's play, but the quarantine stops all activity.

The performance is presented in October 2020 at the Preveza Garden Theater with great success.

Kurt Weill's music is heard live by two musicians on stage with piano and flute, the ten-member troupe sings the songs. The goal is to continue the performances at the T.W.P. theater, but the second quarantine and the theft of all technical equipment stop all planning for many months.
